Chihuahua Health Problems

Chihuahua health problems, although they are not common, you should be aware of them. Most Chihuahuas are healthy dogs and normally live long lives, however there are some medical conditions that are more common in Chihuahuas than others.

Common Chihuahua Health Problems

1. Hydrocephalus

As far as Chihuahua health problems go, hydrocephalus is the most common genetic condition there is. It is a condition where there is too much fluid in the skull, causing the brain to not fully develop. Puppies affected with this condition commonly have an enlarged head. The problem is the cerebral spinal fluid in the brain is not able to drain quickly enough leading to a build up of pressure leading to an enlarged skull and a small brain. This condition is fatal, and good breeders should not breed dogs that are related to dogs who have died of this condition.

2. Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is a condition of low blood sugar. Chihuahuas have very rapid metabolisms and need a constant source of energy. While hypoglycemia is commonly seen in puppies adults may also get this condition. If you have puppies or young adults, stick with a regimented feeding schedule to prevent this condition.

3. Shivering

Although this is not a medical condition new owners who commonly own Chihuahuas think this might be a problem. Chihuahuas may shiver for several reason but normally it is just because thy have a lot of energy and need to expend some of it.

4. Obesity

Obesity, just like in humans is a growing health concern in Chihuahuas. The Chihuahua body is not built to handle a lot of weight and joints that are overstressed tend to develop arthritis.

5. Eye Problems

Chihuahuas have protruding eyes which can lead to several problems. Since they are low to the ground they might be prone to trauma. Also prolapsed eye globes are not uncommon in Chihuahuas after acute trauma to the head.

6. Dystocia

Chihuahuas, since they have small bodies and big heads are prone to dystocia. If you are a breeder or just have one pregnant Chihuahua you must be there to assist in the birth if there are problems. Dystocia problems can quickly lead to the death of the puppies that are stuck in the birth canal and can be fatal to the bitch as well.
