Introduction

Chihuahua Pets are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the United States. They have a long and rich history and are famous for their temperament. Their popularity as a breed has also been helped with the fact that there have been many famous Chihuahuas in movies and television. The famous Taco Bell dog, and Bruiser from the movie Legally Blond are both Chihuahuas and that has contributed greatly to their popularity.

History

Chihuahuas have a long history in Central America dating back hundreds of years. The Aztecs highly valued Chihuahua pets and often were a sign of high class. The Aztecs also considered Chihuahua pets are spirit guides and there fore when the owner died, they also killed the dog so it could guide the spirit in the after life.

Types

Do you know how many types of Chihuahuas there are? If you guessed only two, you are correct. There are only two different types of Chihuahuas, but they come in many different colors. The two types of Chihuahuas are short haired and long haired. The long haired Chihuahuas have a hair length of one to two inches.

Health Problems

Being a small breed of dog Chihuahua pets are more prone to certain disease than other larger dogs. Dystocia, which is difficulty giving birth, is a problem because Chihuahuas have large heads and small bodies. Another problem is hydrocephalus which is a problem in the brain with fluid production leading to an enlarged skull and death. Many Chihuahuas also shiver, but this is not a health problem. Many Chihuahuas shiver either because they have too much energy or are excited.

Temperament

Chihuahuas are famous for their temperament. They are notorious for not getting along with other pets. But curiously enough they get along famously with other Chihuahuas. Chihuahua pets do not like small children either. In fact it is recommended that if you have small children to not get a Chihuahua pet for them.

Chihuahuas although many have a negative view of their temperament are very loyal and loving to their owners. They also are very protective of them.

This dog breed would make a great pet for someone who doesnÕt have small children and will likely only acquire other Chihuahuas in the future.
