You can get playpens almost anywhere. The cheapest way to get one is through a garage sale, normally you should be able find a childrens playpen gently used somewhere. If you know you are going to be reusing it again for years to come because you plan on raising lots of Chihuahua puppies than you should just buy a new one from Wal-Mart.

What qualities to look for in a playpen

There are certain qualities to look for when buying a Chihuahua playpen. First it should be fairly descent size, so your puppy has some room to run and get some exercise. Also you want one that is of decent size so you have room to put food and water bowls inside. Another quality to look for in Chihuahua playpens is that they are sanitizable and have a waterproof bottom.

Another good feature of some play pens is see through sides. This is great for small puppies that way you donÕt have to get up and walk up to it to see the puppy. You will be able to monitor the puppy more closely this way.

What to put inside

Once you get your Chihuahua playpen youÕll want to make sure it is clean. Then on the inside youÕll want to put in a blanket and maybe some absorbent pads to collect spilled water and urine.

Next put a food and water bowl in the bottom. Heavier ceramic bowls work best for this because they are harder to tip over. Also when filing the water bowl, only put small amounts because the puppy will likely spill most of it leaving a wet mess being.

Disinfecting

Once your puppy is large enough to not need the playpen anymore youÕll want to thoroughly clean it before you use it for other puppies. This is essential to prevent disease transmission for things like canine parvovirus. Some playpens you can take apart and actually put the lining in the washing machine, this is the best and easiest way.
