Training your Chihuahua Puppy

Chihuahua puppy training is a very important task all new owners must go through if you hope to raise a great dog. Just because they are small does not mean they are easier to train than other dogs. Although this dog has lots of energy, it should still be trained using positive reinforcement only.

Before you start Chihuahua puppy training you have to make sure everyone in the household will be consistent in their treatment of the puppy and in the specific commands they use. If one person says stop and the other person says heel then the puppy may become confused. This leads to frustration on both the owners part and the dogs.

When training your Chihuahua puppy be sure to only use positive reinforcement. If you are frustrated you may think about using negative reinforcement or punishment, but remember your dog will learn quickest with positive reinforcement.

For example if your dog is barking a lot instead of punishing, instead try to focus the dogÕs attention on some other task.

While Chihuahua puppy training you have to expect them to make some mistakes. Dogs are like very small children, they learn by making mistakes. Realize this is how they learn and when they do something wrong they do not do it to offend, it is just because they are not trained yet.

Remember that dogs are pack animals and naturally follow a strong leader, if you command your dogs attention, and speak in a clear authoritative voice your puppy will listen.

Some common puppy behavior problems are biting and chewing, and barking and whining. Both of these you should stop immediately by refocusing their attention on something else, or on another task.

Also, if you only have one dog you should try to socialize them to other people and dogs at a young age. Puppies, just like children learn the quickest at a young age.
