Chihuahuas and Children
Tips For Mixing Chihuahuas And Children
Chihuahuas and children do not get along, most people can at
least agree to that statement to some degree. Small children
and Chihuahua for sure donÕt mix. Older children and Chihuahuas
are not as much of a problem but it depends on the temperament
of the dog and child.
Chihuahuas normally only like their owners and other
Chihuahuas. Small children might be perceived as other pets in
the house that are not like them, so the dog may get jealous of
them.
If you have small children it is not recommended that you
get a Chihuahua, unless the child is old enough to leave the
Chihuahua alone. The Chihuahua temperament is not going to
change just because there are small children around. Chihuahuas
only do what comes natural to them so it is hard to train them
to tolerate small children.
If the child is old enough, they may be able to understand
what warning signs a Chihuahua gives before they might bark or
bite. Chihuahuas rarely bite and only do so when they feel
threatened and have no other choice.
Some breeders will actually not even sell you a Chihuahua if
they know you have small children in the house.
Chihuahuas should never be left along with children under
the age of 12. Normally by the time they get to this age they
know enough not to test the Chihuahua.
Chihuahuas seem especially intolerant of newborns.
Chihuahuas make great pets if you have older children, or are
not planning on having any children. Chihuahuas and children do
not mix.
