Chihuahua Vomiting
What To Do If Your Chihuahua Is Vomiting
Vomiting is very common in all dogs, even Chihuahuas. In
fact, dogs vomit more often and easily than most other animals.
Almost all cases of vomiting in dogs are self limiting.
Signs that your Chihuahua may be about to vomit include
anxiousness, wanting attention, salivating more, frequent
swallowing.
Causes of Vomiting
Acute gastritisBloatEating GarbageGrass (irritates stomach
lining)Overeating (common in puppies who eat too fast)Scared
(during thunderstorms)Infectious disease (parvo,
distemper)Chronic disease (kidney and liver problems)
To determine the cause note when and where it happens. Does
it happen right after eating, does it happen after playing in
the yard, or does it happen after running?
What does the vomit look like? Is there blood in it, a
certain color or odor? Is there worms present in the vomit?
Persistent Vomiting
Like I said earlier, in most cases the dog just vomits once
and then feels fine again, however repeated cases can be sign
of something more serious.
If your Chihuahua is constantly retching, vomiting, or
trying to vomit and bringing up clear frothy fluid it could
indicate acute gastritis.
Although remember persistent vomiting also appears in severe
life threatening diseases like bloat or pancreatitis.
Treatment of Vomiting
If the vomiting appears severe or persistent see a
veterinarian. Puppies can quickly become dehydrated with
repeated vomiting.
The first step is to withhold food for 24 hours, even
treats. Always have fresh clean water available.
Once vomiting appears to have stopped, give only small
amounts of dog food, or better yet give a mixture of boiled
rice and cooked hamburger, something easy and digestible.
Gradually over 48 hours return the dog to its normal diet.
Other things you could offer include cottage cheese, baby food,
or chicken and rice soup.
If during this time the vomiting continues you need to see a
veterinarian. Most cases of vomiting only happen once and then
the dog is fine.
Summary
If your Chihuahua vomited, remember to first relax and
realize that it is likely just a one time thing and your dog
will feel much better. Keep your dog out of the garbage or from
eating to quickly and it should limit how much vomiting you
see.
