Selecting a Chihuahua
Selecting a Chihuahua puppy can be hard because they all
look equally cute. When going to pick out your puppy you may
find that the puppy has chosen you! In that case your job is
easy. If not, here are some great tips when selecting a
Chihuahua companion.
First determine the quality of dog you desire. Do you want a
show quality dog, or just a healthy dog to have as a companion?
Certain breeders will charge more for puppies that they
determine are show quality. Just because a puppy is not show
quality does not mean it is sick. It just means it doesnÕt meet
the extremely high qualities of a show dog.
What sex of dog do you desire? Male or Female? Both male and
female Chihuahuas tend to be quality aggressive and both tend
to mark tier territories.
When going to pick a puppy out of a litter, examine the
whole litter for signs of sickness. Are their signs of
diarrhea, vomiting? Do any of the puppies have birth defects?
Birth defects although not uncommon donÕt happen very
often.
When picking out a puppy you want to do your own little
health exam.
Selecting a Chihuahua Tips:
>Coat, is it nice and shiny
>Is there vomiting or signs of vomiting
>Is there diarrhea or signs of diarrhea
>Is there any discharge from the eyes
>Is there any discharge from the nose
>Are the ear canals nice and clean
>Teeth are nice and white
>Gums are nice and pink
>Energy, puppies sleep a lot but should have energy when
awake
Personality is also important when selecting a
Chihuahua.. Ideally they say you want a puppy that has a
personality that matches yours. To determine the personality of
the puppies you should try and spend at least one hour with the
litter. If this is not possible ask the breeder what he
things.
Before you leave the breeder with your new puppy get a
health guarantee, and then have a veterinarian give the puppy a
health exam within 72 hours. Remember, donÕt bring puppies home
with you until they are fully weaned, which around 8 weeks of
age when selecting a Chihuahua puppy.
